What Should You Know About an IPL Laser Device?

IPL means intense pulsed light. Unlike a laser, which generally emits one concentrated wavelength, an IPL system releases a range of wavelengths through a filtered handpiece. The light is absorbed by colour in the skin, such as melanin in a brown mark or haemoglobin in visible redness, and converted into heat.

The device can be used in professional treatments such as an IPL photofacial, but suitability depends on the target, skin tone, recent sun exposure, medications, and the device settings. IPL is not the same as every laser treatment, and a darker, changing, or uncertain lesion should be assessed before any light procedure.

Have a qualified clinician identify the concern and check the area before treatment. Share your history of tanning, pigment changes, cold sores, scarring, medicines, and products that make skin more light-sensitive. Follow the clinic’s instructions about shaving, skincare, and avoiding sun exposure.

After treatment, the area may feel warm and look temporarily pink. Use the recommended gentle skincare and broad-spectrum sun protection, and do not pick or scrub treated skin. Contact the clinic if the reaction is becoming more painful, blistered, or swollen rather than settling.

Seek medical assessment before IPL for a spot that is new, rapidly changing, bleeding, crusting, or difficult to diagnose. After treatment, obtain prompt advice for marked swelling, blisters, spreading redness, pus, severe pain, or a change in vision after treatment near the eyes.

Ask which light target is being treated, whether IPL or another technology fits your skin tone, what eye protection and cooling will be used, and which warning signs require a review.
