At-home IPL laser hair removal: what to know

Short answer
At-home IPL can reduce hair growth when used as directed, but device limits and skin-to-hair contrast strongly affect safety and results.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How home IPL works
IPL sends pulses of broad-spectrum light toward pigment in the hair. The absorbed energy becomes heat around the follicle, which can reduce future growth. Because home devices are less powerful than many clinic systems, consistent use according to the manual is central to the plan, and maintenance may be needed.
Dark hair usually gives the device a stronger target than blonde, grey, or white hair. A small contrast between hair and skin can increase the chance of skin heating. IPL is not a treatment for every bump or hair concern: ingrown hairs, Razor Bumps, Hirsutism, and Hidradenitis Suppurativa may need diagnosis and different care.
Using a device carefully
Read the manual, check the permitted skin tones and hair colours, and perform the recommended patch test. Shave rather than wax or pluck if the instructions say the follicle should remain present. Keep the skin clean and dry, avoid recently tanned skin, and do not use the device over tattoos, dark marks, broken skin, or areas with active irritation.
Wear the recommended eye protection and keep the flash window flat against the skin. Do not increase the setting beyond the instructions or treat the same patch repeatedly in one session. Clinic-based Alexandrite Laser, Diode Laser, or Nd:YAG Laser systems may offer a more tailored assessment when home treatment is unsuitable.
When to seek care
Stop using the device and seek advice for blistering, severe pain, marked swelling, burns, or new pronounced lightening or darkening. Get medical care for spreading redness, pus, fever, or worsening tenderness. Persistent or recurrent bumps, draining lumps, or scarring should be assessed instead of repeatedly flashing the area.
Questions for your doctor
Is my skin tone and hair colour compatible with this device? Could my medicines or skin condition increase light sensitivity? Are these bumps ordinary ingrown hairs or a condition needing treatment? Would a clinic laser be more appropriate for this area?
