What should you know about internal lump on neck?

A lump in the throat area or cervical mass may arise from a lymph node, thyroid tissue, salivary tissue, infection or another structure. A neck lump is a presentation of several conditions, including lymphoma, thyroid cancer and head and neck cancer; it does not by itself establish any diagnosis. The clinician will feel the neck, inspect the mouth and throat, and ask about growth, pain, swallowing, voice and recent illness.

Ultrasound or other imaging may clarify whether the lump is solid or fluid-filled and where it begins. Blood tests or a needle sample may be recommended when examination and imaging leave questions. Sometimes the primary source is not immediately clear and further evaluation is needed.

Arrange an appointment, especially if the lump persists, enlarges or feels firm. Note when it appeared, whether it moves, and any changes in voice, swallowing, weight, skin or breathing. Bring a list of medicines and previous scans. Ask what test is best for the exact location and whether a specialist review is needed. Thyroid-related findings may lead to discussion of thyroid removal surgery, but the appropriate plan depends on the assessment.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing swelling, severe neck pain, confusion or fainting. Contact a clinician soon for a lump that persists or grows, or for persistent hoarseness, trouble swallowing, unexplained night sweating or ongoing fever. These features guide urgency; they do not determine the cause on their own.
