What should you know about intercurrent pneumonia?

Pneumonia inflames the small airways and air sacs in the lungs, which can make breathing and oxygen exchange harder. It may appear while someone is recovering from a viral illness such as influenza or COVID-19, or when another health problem has reduced normal lung clearance. Cough, fever, chills, tiredness, breathlessness, and coughing up phlegm can occur, but symptoms vary and older adults may show confusion or unusual weakness instead of a high temperature.

A clinician may listen to the chest, check breathing and oxygen levels, and decide whether imaging or other tests are needed. The cause influences treatment.

Contact a clinician promptly if pneumonia is suspected, particularly when symptoms are worsening or you have a long-term heart or lung condition. Rest, take fluids in small amounts if tolerated, and follow prescribed treatment exactly. Avoid smoking and keep shared spaces ventilated. Wash hands, cover coughs, and avoid close contact with vulnerable people while fever or an infectious illness is present. Do not start leftover antibiotics; they may be unsuitable and may not treat the cause.

Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake, or chest pain that is severe or worsening. Urgent assessment is also needed if breathing rapidly deteriorates, you cannot keep fluids down, or you become markedly weaker. A clinician should review persistent fever, worsening cough, or new breathlessness after an illness.
