Understanding the lump
The gland sits within the eyelid, which explains why an inner stye may feel gritty or painful even when the lump is hard to see. Blinking can make the tenderness more noticeable. Mild redness on the inner lid and watering may accompany it. A stye is not the same as every red eye: widespread redness, marked discharge, or a painless lump may point to another problem.
Steps that may help
Use a comfortably warm, clean compress on the closed eye for several minutes at a time. Repeat regularly while the lid is tender, without pressing hard. Wash your hands before and after touching the area. Leave the lump alone rather than squeezing it, and avoid contact lenses and eye cosmetics until the irritation has cleared. Clean any crust gently; rubbing can worsen swelling.
When examination matters
Contact a GP when the lump is persistent, recurrent, or affecting daily activities. Get urgent help if redness spreads into the surrounding skin, the eyelid becomes very swollen, you develop fever, vision becomes blurred, or moving the eye hurts. A clinician can distinguish a local stye from cellulitis, a blocked gland, or another eye condition.
