Infrapatellar bursitis of the knee

How the structures involved in Bursitis differ from normal

Short answer

Infrapatellar bursitis of the knee is irritation of the bursa below the kneecap, often worsened by kneeling or direct pressure.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Bursa location
Immediately below the kneecap
Typical trigger
Repeated kneeling or direct pressure
Urgent concern
Hot, red swelling with fever or discharge

The short answer

The bursa is a small fluid-filled cushion between moving tissues. Repetitive pressure, friction, a blow or infection can inflame it, producing a tender area or visible swelling at the front of the knee.

How it presents

Pain is usually focused just below the kneecap rather than deep inside the joint. You may notice sensitivity when kneeling, a lump that rubs against clothing, warmth or discomfort when the knee is pressed. The knee can sometimes bend and straighten more easily than expected because the main joint surfaces are not necessarily the source. An examination helps separate bursal inflammation from patellar tendon pain, joint swelling or a skin infection.

Practical care

Temporarily avoid kneeling, crawling and exercises that press on the front of the knee. A padded surface can reduce pressure when work requires kneeling. Keep the knee gently mobile within comfort and return to activity gradually as tenderness improves. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether anti-inflammatory medication is appropriate with your health history. Persistent fluid may lead to discussion of aspiration or an injection, but these procedures require a proper examination first.

Warning signs

Get medical advice when the swelling lasts, recurs, interferes with work or follows a significant impact. Seek urgent assessment for spreading redness, marked warmth, pus, fever, rapidly worsening pain or difficulty bearing weight. These features may indicate infection or another knee problem requiring treatment rather than pressure relief alone.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which structure is swollen, whether you can continue work or sport with modifications, how to protect the knee while kneeling, and whether fluid testing is needed before any procedure.

Questions people ask

Can I walk with infrapatellar bursitis?

Many people can walk, but pain, swelling and the suspected cause should guide activity; avoid movements that increase pressure or sharp pain.

When might fluid be removed?

A clinician may consider aspiration when swelling is substantial, persistent or needs testing, especially when infection must be checked.
