Influenza viruses change over time and are grouped into types, subtypes, and circulating lineages. These labels help health authorities monitor patterns and guide seasonal vaccine composition. They are not a home diagnosis. Different strains can produce overlapping illness, including fever, chills, cough, headache, fatigue, and feeling generally unwell. Reduce spread by staying home while acutely ill, covering coughs, washing hands, and improving airflow indoors. Vaccination is updated to help address expected circulating viruses, but it does not make every respiratory illness impossible. Do not choose treatment based on a strain name found online.

Urgent help is needed for breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, or sudden deterioration. Worsening cough or breathlessness can signal pneumonia and deserves assessment regardless of the suspected strain.
