Recognising influenza flu symptoms

Influenza commonly presents with a sudden cluster of symptoms rather than one isolated complaint. You may feel hot or chilled, develop a [Cough](/symptoms/cough/), and have [Fatigue](/symptoms/fatigue/) that makes ordinary activity difficult. [Headache](/symptoms/headache/) and a feeling of being generally unwell are also possible. A runny nose or sore throat can occur, but the pattern varies between people.

Rest, drink regularly, and choose simple foods while your appetite is reduced. Stay away from close contact where possible, cover coughs, and wash your hands. Use medicines only according to their instructions, taking account of other products and health conditions. Note when symptoms began and whether breathing, hydration, and alertness are changing. Arrange medical advice if symptoms are severe, continue to worsen, or improve and then return. Get prompt help for chest pain, confusion, dehydration, a severe headache, or difficulty breathing. Emergency help is needed for major breathing trouble, a seizure, or inability to wake normally.
