Influenza fever: what to know

Short answer
Influenza fever reflects the body's response to infection and may occur with chills, cough, headache, and fatigue; fluids, rest, and careful monitoring are useful.

What influenza fever tells you
Fever is a raised body temperature produced as the immune system responds to infection. In influenza it commonly appears with chills, cough, headache, tiredness, and a general feeling of being unwell. The temperature reading alone cannot identify influenza or show how serious the illness is; breathing, alertness, hydration, and the direction of symptoms matter too. Some people with influenza do not develop a noticeable fever.
Managing fever at home
Rest in a comfortable room, drink regularly, and choose loose clothing and light bedding. Use a reliable thermometer if you need to monitor temperature, and follow the label or a clinician's advice for fever medicine. Check active ingredients before combining cold remedies. Do not use cold baths or alcohol rubs. Keep children supervised, offer frequent fluids, and ask a pharmacist about age-appropriate products.
Warning signs
Seek urgent help for difficult breathing, chest pain, confusion, a seizure, severe drowsiness, blue or grey lips, or signs of serious dehydration. Arrange prompt medical review if fever persists with worsening illness, returns after improvement, or occurs in a pregnant person, an infant, or someone with a condition that raises complication risk. Pneumonia is one possible complication requiring assessment.
Questions to bring
How often should I check the temperature? Which fever medicine is safe with my other treatments? What signs mean home care is no longer enough?
