Influenza epidemic: what it means

An epidemic describes increased transmission in a defined population or area; it does not mean every cough is influenza. Influenza spreads mainly through respiratory droplets and particles released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, and through contaminated hands touching the face. Common illness features include fever, chills, cough, headache, fatigue, and feeling generally unwell. Local health authorities may give specific updates as activity changes.

Stay home when acutely unwell, improve ventilation, wash hands regularly, and cover coughs and sneezes. Avoid sharing cups, towels, and utensils, and consider a well-fitting mask in crowded indoor settings when respiratory illness is circulating. Ask a healthcare professional about seasonal vaccination, especially if you are pregnant, older, immunocompromised, or living with a long-term condition. If you become ill, rest and drink enough to avoid dehydration.

Urgent assessment is needed for difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or inability to drink. Contact a clinician promptly if you are in a higher-risk group, symptoms are intense, or you worsen after initial improvement. Pneumonia can develop as a complication and needs medical assessment.
