Influenza A RNA detected: understanding the test

RNA testing looks for genetic material from the virus in the sample. A detected result supports influenza A infection, but the test does not measure symptom severity, infectiousness at a particular moment or the presence of pneumonia. Fever, chills, cough, fatigue, headache and feeling generally unwell can occur. The meaning also depends on when the sample was collected and whether your symptoms fit the result.

Follow the testing clinician’s advice, rest, drink fluids and use suitable symptom relief as directed. Stay home from close contact when you feel ill, ventilate shared rooms, cover coughs and clean your hands. Ask promptly about antiviral treatment if symptoms started recently or you are pregnant, immunocompromised, older, or living with a condition that raises the risk of complications. Do not use antibiotics unless prescribed for a bacterial infection.

Get urgent help if breathing becomes hard, chest pain develops, you are confused or difficult to wake, you faint, or you cannot drink enough to urinate normally. Contact a clinician when symptoms are worsening rather than settling, when fever returns after improvement, or when a cough becomes more severe. Influenza may be associated with pneumonia, which needs clinical assessment.
