What should you know about influenza 1918?

Influenza is a respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. The 1918 pandemic refers to a historical global outbreak associated with an influenza A virus. It is not a diagnosis that can be made from a current cough or fever, and historical labels do not identify the virus causing illness now.

Flu may cause fever, chills, cough, headache, fatigue and a general feeling of being unwell. Some people develop complications such as pneumonia, particularly when the illness places extra strain on breathing or existing health problems.

Rest, drink fluids as tolerated, and limit close contact while unwell. Follow local medical advice about testing, symptom relief and returning to normal activities. Avoid giving children or teenagers medicines containing aspirin unless a clinician specifically advises it. People who are pregnant, older, immunocompromised or living with long-term conditions should seek medical advice early.

Get urgent medical help for trouble breathing, chest pain, bluish lips, new confusion, severe weakness, dehydration, or symptoms that improve and then become markedly worse. A persistent high fever or worsening cough also warrants clinical review, especially when pneumonia is a concern.
