Infliximab for psoriatic arthritis: what should you know?

Infliximab blocks tumour necrosis factor, a messenger involved in inflammation. By reducing this signal, it may improve [Joint Pain](/symptoms/joint-pain/), [Joint Swelling](/symptoms/joint-swelling/), and [Morning Joint Stiffness](/symptoms/morning-joint-stiffness/) for some people. It is not suitable for everyone and does not replace a complete assessment of your joints, skin, medical history, and previous treatments.

The medicine is given by intravenous infusion in a monitored setting. Your care team will explain the schedule, check how you respond, and review whether treatment remains appropriate. Tell them about infections, previous reactions to biologic medicines, heart problems, nerve symptoms, or other important health conditions.

Before an infusion, report fever, cough, new infection symptoms, or recent exposure to a serious infection. Bring an up-to-date list of medicines and tell the team about vaccinations, pregnancy plans, allergies, and long-term conditions. Attend monitoring visits even when your joints feel better.

Contact your treatment team promptly for fever, persistent cough, breathlessness, painful urination, unusual weakness, numbness, or a spreading rash. During or soon after an infusion, seek immediate help for trouble breathing, facial or throat swelling, chest tightness, dizziness, or widespread hives. These symptoms can signal a significant reaction or infection.

Ask why infliximab is being considered, what checks are needed before the first infusion, how reactions are managed, and how response will be measured. Discuss vaccines, infection precautions, missed appointments, pregnancy plans, and when to pause treatment.
