What should you know about infection lump on neck?

Lymph nodes in the neck can enlarge when the throat, ear, teeth, skin, or nearby tissues are inflamed. Tenderness, warmth, fever, sore throat, cough, or dental pain may accompany an infection. A neck lump can also have other causes, so its presence alone does not identify the cause.

A clinician may examine your mouth, throat, ears, thyroid, and skin, then decide whether observation, tests, or treatment is needed. The size, texture, mobility, location, and duration all help guide that decision.

Note when the lump appeared and whether it changes with illness. Drink fluids, rest, and use medicines only as directed. Do not squeeze or repeatedly press the area. Arrange an appointment if it is growing, firm, fixed, unexplained, or remains after the suspected infection settles.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, rapidly increasing swelling, severe neck stiffness, confusion, or feeling faint. Prompt assessment is also needed for persistent hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or a lump that does not improve.
