Infant itchy scalp: what parents should know

Look for scale, redness, scratches, spots, broken hairs or visible nits close to the hair shaft. Seborrheic Dermatitis can cause greasy scale, while Dandruff is less typical in very young babies. Scalp Psoriasis may form thicker, sharply defined scale. Head Lice can cause persistent itch and crawling insects or attached nits; Folliculitis may cause tender bumps around hairs. Wash with a mild, fragrance-free baby shampoo and rinse thoroughly. Do not scratch, pick scale, or use adult dandruff products without advice.
