Short answer

An infant dairy allergy assessment combines the symptom history with examination and, when appropriate, supervised allergy testing or an elimination and reintroduction plan.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the assessment works

Cow's milk protein reactions can be immediate, with hives, swelling, vomiting, cough, or breathing symptoms, or delayed, with feeding difficulty, loose or bloody stools, eczema, or poor weight gain. A skin prick test or allergy blood test may support an immediate allergy, but a result is interpreted alongside the history. A negative or positive test does not by itself explain every feeding symptom. Delayed reactions may need a carefully planned dairy elimination followed by reintroduction under clinical guidance.

Preparing for the visit

Write down what the infant ate, how much, when symptoms began, and how long they lasted. Bring details about formula, breastfeeding, supplements, eczema, stools, vomiting, and growth. Do not remove dairy from a breastfeeding parent's diet or change formula without professional advice, because an unplanned restriction can affect nutrition. Never test a suspected allergy by offering a large amount at home; the clinician can explain the safest method.

When to seek care

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, collapse, extreme sleepiness, or repeated vomiting soon after a feed. These can be signs of a severe allergic reaction. Seek prompt clinical advice for blood in stools, persistent vomiting, dehydration, feeding refusal, or poor growth. Keep following the clinician's emergency plan if one has been supplied.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pattern fits Food Allergy, which test is useful, whether an elimination trial is appropriate, and how dairy can be replaced nutritionally. Ask when and how reintroduction should happen, and what to do if hives, vomiting, or breathing symptoms occur.

Questions people ask

Is one test enough to diagnose dairy allergy?

Usually, diagnosis depends on the reaction history and examination as well as any test result; delayed symptoms may need a supervised elimination and reintroduction plan.

Should dairy be stopped immediately?

Discuss the change with a clinician first, especially for an infant, so feeding and nutrition remain safe.
