Short answer

An increased liver function test result is a finding that needs context, repeat testing, and clinical review rather than a diagnosis by itself.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What the result may mean

A liver function test usually includes several measurements. Some reflect irritation or injury to liver cells, while others give information about bile flow or the liver’s ability to make proteins. One value may rise after illness, alcohol use, medicines, supplements, strenuous exercise, or a temporary change that settles on repeat testing.

The pattern and degree of change matter. A clinician may compare the result with earlier tests, ask about alcohol and medicines, examine you, and arrange repeat blood tests or imaging. Viral hepatitis, including Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C, is among the possible explanations; Alcohol Use Disorder is another possible cause, but an abnormal result does not establish either condition.

What to do next

Arrange a review with the clinician who requested the test. Bring a complete list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, herbal remedies, and supplements, including anything started recently. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Until you receive guidance, avoid alcohol and avoid taking extra products marketed for liver cleansing.

Your clinician may repeat the Liver Function Test, check related blood tests, or request an ultrasound. Keep the follow-up appointment even if you feel well, because liver changes can be found before symptoms appear.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical help for yellowing of the skin or eyes with confusion, unusual sleepiness, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, marked swelling, very dark urine with pale stools, or bleeding that does not stop. Seek prompt advice if symptoms began soon after a new medicine or supplement.

Questions for your doctor

Which liver test values are increased, and how far are they from my earlier results? Could any medicine, supplement, alcohol exposure, infection, or other illness explain the pattern? When should the test be repeated, and do I need imaging or referral?
