What should you know about Imfinzi for lung cancer?

Imfinzi, also called durvalumab, blocks a checkpoint signal that can limit immune activity. This may help immune cells respond to cancer. Whether it is suitable depends on the lung cancer type and stage, previous treatment, test results, and your general health. It may be considered alongside other approaches in a planned sequence; the oncology team will explain why it is recommended and how long the plan is expected to continue.

The medicine can cause immune cells to inflame healthy tissues. Possible areas include the lungs, bowel, liver, skin, thyroid and other hormone glands, kidneys, or nervous system. A new symptom is worth reporting even if it seems mild.

Give your team a full list of medicines and supplements, and mention autoimmune disease, organ transplant history, allergies, and prior cancer treatments. Ask how Imfinzi will fit with surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy if more than one treatment is planned. Keep a record of infusion dates and symptoms, and check before taking a new medicine or vaccine. Attend the blood tests and reviews arranged for monitoring.

Call your oncology team promptly for a new cough, worsening breathlessness, chest pain, persistent diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, rash, yellow skin, dark urine, marked weakness, headache, confusion, or reduced urine. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden weakness, or swelling of the face or throat. Symptoms can have causes other than treatment, but they still need timely assessment.
