Laser hair removal sends controlled light into the hair follicle, where pigment absorbs energy and creates heat. This can reduce the follicle's ability to produce hair. Because hairs grow in different phases, a course of appointments is usually needed, and maintenance treatment may be useful later. Alexandrite, diode and Nd:YAG systems have different wavelengths and are chosen according to skin tone, hair pigment, treatment area and clinical judgement. Very light, grey or red hair may respond differently because it contains less of the target pigment.

Contact the treating clinic for blistering, marked swelling, increasing pain, pus, spreading redness or a lasting light or dark patch. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, wheezing or other signs of a serious allergic reaction. If unwanted hair is accompanied by irregular periods, sudden changes or acne, ask about conditions such as hirsutism rather than treating the hair alone.
