If urine is cloudy?

A small change may follow low fluid intake, sweating, or a sample mixing with discharge. Mineral crystals can make urine appear hazy, especially when it cools. Infection is more concerning when cloudiness comes with burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, unpleasant smell, or blood.

Fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the back or side can indicate that infection has reached the kidneys. Cloudy urine by itself does not establish an infection.

Drink fluids according to your usual needs unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Observe whether the appearance changes and note burning, urgency, discharge, pain, fever, or blood. Collecting a clean midstream urine sample can make testing more useful if a clinician requests one.

Arrange a review if cloudiness persists, keeps returning, or occurs with urinary symptoms. Do not use leftover antibiotics, because treatment depends on the cause.

Get prompt medical care for cloudy urine with fever, chills, flank pain, vomiting, visible blood, pregnancy, or difficulty passing urine. Seek emergency help for confusion, collapse, or severe weakness. These symptoms can signal a more serious infection or obstruction.

Ask whether you need a urine dipstick or culture, whether discharge could be affecting the sample, and which symptoms would mean the infection is involving the kidneys. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, recent antibiotics, medicines, and any history of stones or urinary problems.
