What happens if lung cancer spreads to the brain?

How the structures involved in Lung Cancer differ from normal

Short answer

When lung cancer spreads to the brain, doctors confirm the finding with scans and tailor treatment to the number, size, location, symptoms, and biology of the deposits.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Name
Brain metastases are deposits of cancer that began elsewhere.
Planning
Scan findings, symptoms, tumour biology, and general health shape treatment.

What this means

A cancer deposit that reaches the brain from another organ is called a brain metastasis. It is still lung cancer, but it may cause brain-specific symptoms such as headache, seizure, weakness, balance trouble, confusion, speech difficulty, or changes in vision. Symptoms vary with the affected area, and some people have no symptoms when the deposits are found on staging scans.

The team may use brain MRI, other scans, examination, and tumour information to plan care. A sample may be tested through [Genomic Tumour Profiling](/treatments/diagnostics-and-staging/genomic-tumour-profiling/) because molecular features can influence systemic treatment choices. The finding changes staging and planning, but it does not mean that no treatment or support is available.

What to do next

Ask which scan confirmed the finding, whether swelling is present, and whether a specialist team will review the case. Depending on the situation, options can include medicines for swelling or seizures, focused or whole-brain [Radiotherapy](/treatments/radiation-oncology/radiotherapy/), surgery for a suitable deposit, and medicines that treat cancer throughout the body, including [Chemotherapy](/treatments/systemic-therapy/chemotherapy/).

Discuss the goals of each option, expected effects on daily activities, and how the lung tumour and brain findings will be followed. [Palliative Care](/treatments/supportive-and-palliative-care/palliative-care/) can help with symptoms and emotional support at any stage alongside cancer treatment. Keep a current medicine list and tell the team about seizures, falls, anticoagulants, and changes in thinking or speech.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help for a first seizure, a seizure that continues, sudden weakness, new trouble speaking, loss of consciousness, severe confusion, or a sudden severe headache with vomiting. Contact the oncology team promptly for worsening balance, repeated falls, increasing sleepiness, new vision changes, or a persistent headache. A new [Hoarse Voice](/symptoms/hoarse-voice/) alone does not establish brain spread, but it should be assessed when persistent or accompanied by other symptoms.

Questions for your doctor

How was brain spread confirmed? Are there signs of swelling? Which treatment is aimed at the brain and which treats the lung cancer throughout the body? Should tumour profiling guide medicine choices? What symptoms require emergency help?

Questions people ask

Is brain spread from lung cancer treatable?

Treatment may include local brain-directed care, medicines for the wider cancer, symptom control, or combinations chosen by a specialist team.

Does everyone with brain spread have symptoms?

No. Some deposits are found during imaging before symptoms appear, while others cause neurological changes.
