What should you know about lung cancer and metastasis to the brain?

A brain metastasis is a tumour deposit that began elsewhere and travelled to the brain. Doctors may use brain imaging, usually with contrast when appropriate, alongside examination and review of the lung cancer’s pathology. Symptoms can include headache, seizures, weakness, balance difficulty, vision change, confusion, or altered speech, although some deposits are found during planned assessment.

The care team also considers the lung tumour’s molecular features, overall health, and whether disease is present outside the brain. These details help determine whether local treatment, whole-body treatment, symptom control, or a combination is appropriate.

Treatment discussions may include radiotherapy, surgery such as a lung lobectomy when relevant to the chest disease, chemotherapy, or medicines selected after genomic tumour profiling. Steroids or anti-seizure treatment may be considered for specific symptoms. Palliative care can be added at any stage to support comfort, function, and decision-making.

Keep a record of new neurological symptoms and medicines. Do not stop steroids or anti-seizure medicines suddenly unless the treating clinician gives that instruction.

Call emergency services for a first seizure, a seizure lasting longer than expected, sudden one-sided weakness, difficulty speaking, severe confusion, collapse, or a rapidly worsening headache with vomiting. Contact the oncology team promptly for a new hoarse voice, worsening balance, or any neurological change that is unfamiliar.
