If a little blood comes up when I cough

Blood may come from irritated airways after forceful or repeated coughing. It can occur during Acute Bronchitis or a Common Cold, and mucus draining from Allergic Rhinitis can irritate the throat. Acid Reflux may also trigger a persistent cough. Asthma, Bronchiectasis, Bronchiolitis, and Chronic Cough are other possible conditions that need a clinician to distinguish them.

Notice whether the blood is bright red, mixed through phlegm, or coming from the mouth or nose instead. The amount, frequency, duration of the cough, fever, chest symptoms, and smoking history help guide assessment.

Contact a clinician for advice, especially if the blood returns. Record when it happened, how much you saw, and any medicines that affect bleeding. Rest, drink fluids, and avoid smoking or vaping while arranging review. Do not assume a small amount is harmless if you are taking blood thinners or have a lung condition.

Seek emergency care if bleeding is more than a few streaks, keeps increasing, or comes with breathlessness, chest pain, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, fainting, confusion, or blue lips. Urgent assessment is also needed if you cough blood after a chest injury or feel severely unwell.

Ask what may be irritating your airways, whether you need an examination or chest tests, how to manage the cough, and whether any current medicine could contribute to bleeding.
