Wheezing when I exhale

Airways can narrow because of inflammation, mucus, muscle tightening, or irritation. Asthma commonly causes variable wheeze, while COPD may cause more persistent airflow limitation. Acute Bronchitis can temporarily irritate the airways, and allergies may add congestion or cough. The fact that the sound is louder on exhalation does not establish one diagnosis. A clinician will ask about duration, triggers, fever, cough, chest tightness, smoking or vaping, and previous episodes.

Sit upright, breathe gently, and avoid smoke, dust, fragrance, and cold air if they worsen the sound. If you have a prescribed inhaler, follow your personal instructions and keep track of how well it works. Seek a clinical review when the wheeze is new, returns repeatedly, disrupts sleep, or limits walking. Examination may include listening to the lungs, checking oxygen levels, and arranging breathing tests. Nebuliser Treatment may be considered in an urgent-care setting for selected breathing episodes.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, inability to speak normally, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or rapidly worsening chest tightness. Wheezing after food, medicine, or an insect sting with facial or throat swelling can be Anaphylaxis; treat this as an emergency.
