I hear wheezing when I breathe

Wheezing may occur with Asthma, COPD, or Acute Bronchitis. Allergic Rhinitis can contribute when nasal and airway irritation occur together. In young children, Bronchiolitis is another possibility. The sound can be more noticeable during exhalation, but its timing alone does not identify the cause. A clinician will consider the onset, triggers, cough, fever, chest tightness, smoking or vaping exposure, and previous breathing problems.

Move away from smoke, dust, strong scents, or a suspected allergen and sit upright. Use a prescribed reliever inhaler exactly as directed; do not use someone else’s medicine. Arrange prompt assessment if wheezing is new, recurring, or affecting sleep or activity. A clinician may listen to your chest, check oxygen levels, and assess whether inhaled treatment or further testing is needed. Nebuliser Treatment is sometimes used in urgent settings when inhaled medicine needs to be delivered in another way.

Call emergency services if you cannot speak in full sentences, are struggling to breathe, develop blue or grey lips, become confused, or have rapidly worsening chest tightness. Wheezing with swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, widespread hives, or sudden collapse may indicate Anaphylaxis and requires immediate help.
