I have a lump on my neck under my ear: what should I know?

Lymph nodes under or behind the ear may swell with an ear, throat, scalp, or dental infection. A salivary-gland problem can cause swelling near the jaw or ear, sometimes worsening around meals. A skin cyst may have a visible pore or surface change. Head and Neck Cancer and lymphoma can also present with a neck mass, but the presence of a lump does not establish either diagnosis. Cancer of Unknown Primary describes a different diagnostic situation in which cancer is identified but its original site remains uncertain.

Tell the clinician whether the lump is painful, warm, mobile, firm, or attached to deeper tissue. Mention ear discharge, tooth pain, sore throat, facial weakness, hearing change, fever, or any recent infection.

Check the area gently rather than repeatedly prodding it. Note its position and changes, and arrange a medical appointment if it lasts, grows, or has no obvious connection with an infection. Examination may include the ear, mouth, teeth, throat, skin, salivary glands, and neck. Tests are selected according to those findings.

Get urgent help if swelling affects breathing or swallowing, or if you develop facial weakness, severe infection symptoms, or rapidly worsening pain. Seek prompt review for a firm or fixed lump, persistent hoarseness, ongoing swallowing difficulty, unexplained weight change, or night sweats. A painless lump still deserves review when it does not resolve.
