Hypothyroidism and shortness of breath

An underactive thyroid slows several body processes. Some people notice breathlessness when walking, climbing stairs, or doing tasks that previously felt easy. Weak breathing muscles, reduced fitness, anaemia, asthma, and heart or lung conditions can also cause similar symptoms. The symptom does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

A clinician may ask whether the breathlessness is sudden or gradual, occurs at rest or with activity, and comes with cough, wheeze, chest discomfort, swelling, or a racing heartbeat. Thyroid blood tests can be considered alongside an examination and other tests.

Arrange a medical review if breathlessness is new, persistent, or limiting ordinary activity. Bring a list of medicines and note when symptoms occur, how long they last, and whether lying down changes them. Take prescribed thyroid medicine as directed; do not change the dose or add thyroid supplements without medical advice. Avoid strenuous exertion until the cause is clearer.

Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or inability to speak in full sentences. Urgent assessment is also needed for breathlessness with chest pressure, coughing blood, or sudden facial or throat swelling.
