Hypothyroidism and liver function

Thyroid hormones influence energy use throughout the body, and an underactive thyroid may occur alongside changes in some liver blood tests. An abnormal result can also reflect fatty liver, alcohol, infection, medicines, muscle injury, or another liver condition. The pattern of results, symptoms, examination, and previous tests matters more than one isolated value. Hypothyroidism itself may cause fatigue, cold intolerance, constipation, or a hoarse voice, but these symptoms do not show whether the liver is involved.

Ask your clinician to interpret thyroid and liver results together rather than relying on an online result range. Tell them about alcohol use, prescribed medicines, pain relievers, herbal products, supplements, and recent illness. They may repeat blood tests, review the pattern over time, examine you, or arrange further assessment when needed. Continue prescribed treatment unless advised otherwise, and do not begin a cleanse or supplement intended to support the liver without checking its safety.

Seek prompt care for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, persistent vomiting, increasing abdominal swelling, or unusual bleeding. Emergency help is needed for confusion, collapse, severe abdominal pain, or difficulty breathing. Contact your clinician about ongoing fatigue or worsening symptoms even if you have no liver warning signs.
