Hyperthyroidism and toxic goiter

Goiter means that the thyroid is enlarged. Toxic means that the gland is producing excess thyroid hormone, rather than describing poisoning. The enlargement may be spread across the gland or involve one or more overactive areas. Increased thyroid hormone can speed up heart rate, energy use, temperature control, and digestion. Symptoms may include tremor, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, weight loss, excessive sweating, heat intolerance, diarrhoea, or a visible neck swelling.

A neck swelling can have several causes, and thyroid size does not by itself show how active the gland is. Clinicians use examination, thyroid blood tests, and sometimes imaging to understand the structure and hormone production.

Book a medical appointment for a new neck swelling, pressure in the throat, voice change, or symptoms suggesting thyroid overactivity. Note whether swallowing or breathing feels different and record heartbeat episodes, sweating, sleep, bowel habits, and weight changes. Bring your medicine and supplement list. Avoid pressing or repeatedly checking the swelling, and do not use thyroid treatments without a diagnosis. The clinician will explain which tests are suitable and whether specialist review is needed.

Get urgent medical help if a neck swelling causes severe breathing or swallowing difficulty, or if you develop chest pain, fainting, confusion, or a persistent very fast or irregular heartbeat. Fever with severe agitation, vomiting, or extreme weakness is also urgent. A rapidly changing swelling should be assessed promptly.
