What should you know about hyperthyroidism in men?

Men may notice palpitations, hand tremor, sweating, heat intolerance, loose stools, poor sleep, irritability, or reduced exercise tolerance. Some develop muscle weakness or changes in sexual function. Hyperthyroidism is a condition presenting with these symptoms; having one symptom does not mean the condition is present. Examination and thyroid blood tests help separate thyroid overactivity from heart, medicine, stress, or other causes.

Book a medical review when symptoms persist or affect work, exercise, sleep, or sexual wellbeing. Bring a list of medicines and supplements and mention thyroid history, neck swelling, or eye changes. Do not change thyroid medicine without prescribing advice.

Get urgent help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, confusion, pronounced weakness, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat. Rapid worsening with fever, vomiting, or dehydration also warrants urgent assessment.

Ask which thyroid tests are needed, what may be causing the overactivity, how treatment will be monitored, and which symptoms should trigger urgent care.
