Hyperthyroidism and dizziness

An overactive thyroid can make the heart beat faster and increase the body's demand for fluid. Sweating, diarrhoea, reduced intake, anxiety, and poor sleep may add to light-headedness. Some people describe spinning, while others feel faint or unsteady; that distinction helps guide the assessment. Palpitations, heat intolerance, tremor, and unexplained weight change can support a thyroid-related pattern, but none proves the cause.

Dizziness is a common presentation of many conditions, so it does not usually mean hyperthyroidism. Your clinician may check your pulse and blood pressure, review medicines, examine balance and hearing when relevant, and request thyroid or other blood tests.

Sit or lie down when dizziness starts, rise slowly, and drink fluids unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Avoid driving, heights, and machinery while symptoms are active. Record what you were doing, whether the sensation was spinning or faintness, how long it lasted, and any palpitations, sweating, diarrhoea, or sleep difficulty. Arrange review if episodes recur or interfere with work or walking.

Seek emergency care for dizziness with fainting, chest pain, severe breathlessness, new weakness, trouble speaking, severe headache, confusion, or a sustained very fast or irregular heartbeat. Contact a clinician soon if dizziness follows repeated diarrhoea or heavy sweating, because dehydration may need treatment.
