Hyperthyroidism and vulvar itching

Hyperthyroidism can cause sweating, heat intolerance, anxiety, palpitations, diarrhoea and sleep difficulty, but vulvar itching is not a defining thyroid symptom. Itching may instead reflect irritation from products, dermatitis, thrush, another infection, skin conditions or hormonal dryness. These causes can coexist with thyroid disease, so one symptom should not be used to diagnose the other.

A clinician may ask about discharge, odour, soreness, urinary symptoms, sexual health, new products and skin changes. Examination or a swab may be appropriate, while thyroid blood tests are considered when other thyroid features are present.

Arrange an appointment if itching persists, returns, affects sleep or comes with discharge, sores or pain. Wash gently with lukewarm water, keep the area dry, choose loose breathable underwear and avoid scented washes, douches and perfumed pads. Do not use repeated over-the-counter treatments without confirming the cause.

Record possible triggers, skin changes, medicines and any thyroid symptoms. A clinician can choose treatment based on the finding; thyroid treatment will not replace treatment for a separate vulvar condition.

Seek prompt medical care for severe swelling, spreading redness, intense pain, fever, blisters, ulcers, bleeding, or difficulty passing urine. Get urgent help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness or a very fast or irregular heartbeat occurring with other symptoms.

Ask what may be irritating the skin, whether an examination or swab is needed, which products are safe to use, and whether your other symptoms justify thyroid testing.
