Hypertension and cold hands: what should you know?

Hands may feel cold because of a cool environment, stress-related blood-vessel narrowing, reduced circulation, anaemia, thyroid problems or a medicine effect. Hypertension itself often causes no noticeable symptoms. Persistent coldness, colour change, numbness or pain deserves a clinical review, especially if one hand is affected or symptoms began after a new medicine.

Warm your hands gradually, keep them dry, avoid smoking and note when the sensation occurs. Do not stop prescribed blood-pressure treatment without advice. Record home blood-pressure readings with the time, posture and symptoms, and arrange an appointment if the problem keeps returning. A clinician can check pulses, skin colour, medicines and possible circulation or nerve causes.

Seek emergency help for sudden weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, severe chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting or a hand that becomes suddenly pale, blue, very painful or cold. These warning signs can indicate a serious circulation, heart or neurological problem; they should not be explained away as hypertension.
