Hyperpigmentation and exfoliation: what to know

How the structures involved in Hyperpigmentation differ from normal

Short answer

Hyperpigmentation and exfoliation need a careful balance: gentle, suitable exfoliation may smooth surface build-up, while irritation can create more pigment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What exfoliation can and cannot do

Exfoliation loosens dead surface cells; it does not erase pigment stored deeper in the skin. Scrubs, brushes, strong acids, or combining several active products can disrupt the barrier, causing burning, dryness, or inflammation. That irritation may leave additional darkening, especially in skin that tends to mark after a rash or injury.

A gentler approach

Do not exfoliate broken, sunburned, itchy, or actively inflamed skin. Start with a mild routine, moisturise afterward, and stop if stinging persists. Protect exposed areas from sunlight because ultraviolet exposure can maintain pigment. A dermatologist may recommend Chemical Peel, Skin Brightening Treatment, IPL Photofacial, Picosecond Laser Treatment, or Hydroquinone Treatment when appropriate, with preparation and aftercare tailored to your skin.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pigment appears suddenly, spreads, has an irregular border, or comes with a changing mole, ulcer, bleeding, persistent itch, or pain. Seek care for a chemical burn, blistering, swelling, or severe tenderness after exfoliation. Persistent dark patches may need diagnosis before any further active product is used.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the colour is surface scale or true pigment, which ingredients to avoid, and how often a product should be used. Confirm what to pause before a peel or energy-based procedure and which signs mean your barrier is becoming irritated.

Questions people ask

Can exfoliating remove dark spots?

It may improve surface roughness but cannot reliably remove deeper pigment, and overuse can worsen colour.

Should I exfoliate every day?

Daily exfoliation is not suitable for everyone; frequency depends on the product, body site, and your skin’s tolerance.
