Hyperpigmentation and Age Spots

Age spots are usually flat tan, brown, or deeper brown marks on areas that receive sun, such as the face, hands, shoulders, and forearms. They reflect pigment collected in the skin over time; the label does not establish a diagnosis by itself. Several other marks can look similar, so a clinician may inspect a new or changing spot with magnification.

A spot that changes in shape, border, colour, size, sensation, or surface should not be assumed to be an age spot. Dark patches on skin may have different causes and need the right assessment before cosmetic treatment.

Limit further ultraviolet exposure with shade, protective clothing, and regular broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin. Avoid picking or irritating a mark, and take occasional photographs in consistent lighting so changes are easier to notice. Book a skin examination for a spot that is new, enlarging, asymmetrical, unevenly coloured, bleeding, crusting, persistently itchy, or tender. Arrange earlier review if several features appear together. Do not apply a strong lightening product to an undiagnosed changing mark.
