Hyfrecator Electrocautery: What to Know

A hyfrecator is a type of electrosurgical unit. The clinician selects an appropriate setting and applies energy through a small instrument to dry, seal, or destroy a targeted area. It may be used for certain benign growths, bleeding points, or as part of curettage and cautery. Local anaesthetic may be offered when the site or procedure calls for it. The treated area commonly forms a crust and heals gradually rather than disappearing immediately.

Tell the clinician about implanted electrical devices, medicines that affect bleeding, poor wound healing, allergies to local anaesthetic, and any active infection near the area. Follow instructions about washing and dressing the site. Do not peel the crust, soak the wound, or apply unapproved products. Protect newly healed skin from strong sun to reduce the chance of a lingering colour change.

Get advice if bleeding does not stop with firm, continuous pressure, or if pain, redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge is worsening. Fever, red streaking, or an opening wound also needs medical review. A new or changing lesion should be reassessed rather than repeatedly treated at home.

Ask what is being treated, whether a sample needs laboratory assessment, what anaesthetic and wound dressing will be used, how long healing may take, and whether a scar or colour change is expected.
