Hydrops and Meniere's disease: what to know

The inner ear helps control hearing and balance. Changes in its fluid environment may disturb both systems, producing episodes of vertigo, ringing in the ears, a blocked or full sensation and fluctuating hearing. Hydrops is a description of a suspected inner-ear process, not by itself a complete diagnosis. Similar symptoms can arise from other ear, neurological or cardiovascular problems.

Arrange a clinical assessment if episodes recur or hearing changes. A clinician may review the timing of attacks, examine your ears and arrange a hearing test. Keep a diary of vertigo, ear symptoms, possible triggers, medicines and recovery time. During an attack, sit or lie somewhere safe, avoid driving and rise slowly afterwards. Regular meals, good sleep and a moderate, consistent approach to salt and caffeine may be discussed, but tailor changes to your clinician's advice.

Seek emergency help for sudden hearing loss, new weakness or numbness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, a severe new headache, fainting or inability to walk safely. Prompt review is also appropriate for persistent vomiting, severe headache with dizziness, ear discharge or symptoms after a head injury.
