What should you know about humidity and muscle cramps?

Short answer
Humidity may contribute to muscle cramps because sweating and exertion can increase fluid loss, but repeated cramps can have other causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Cool down and gently stretch
Why cramps may occur
Humid air slows sweat evaporation, so the body can feel hotter during activity. Sweating, heavy exertion and drinking too little can contribute to dehydration, which may make muscles more prone to sudden tightening. A cramp can also follow a muscle strain or prolonged position. Frequent or unexplained episodes may relate to medicines, circulation problems, thyroid disease, kidney disease or low vitamin D, so the pattern matters.
What to do during and after a cramp
Stop the activity and move to a cooler place. Gently stretch and massage the affected muscle without forcing it. Sip fluids, and plan regular breaks in hot, humid conditions. Wear light clothing and avoid returning to strenuous activity until the muscle has relaxed. Do not start electrolyte or vitamin supplements routinely without advice, particularly if you have kidney disease or take medicines that affect fluid balance.
When to seek care
Get urgent help if cramps occur with confusion, fainting, severe weakness, very hot skin or inability to drink. Arrange a medical review for recurrent cramps, cramps that persist despite rest and fluids, one-sided swelling, numbness, weakness or pain brought on by walking. These features need assessment rather than being blamed on humidity alone.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your medicines, hydration pattern, circulation, thyroid function or vitamin levels could be contributing, and which activities are safe while symptoms are investigated.

Questions people ask

Should I take salt or supplements?
Not routinely. The right approach depends on your health, medicines, diet and the reason for the cramps.
