Labour commonly includes contractions that change the cervix, a pushing stage, birth of the baby, and delivery of the placenta. The care team may monitor the baby’s heart rate, the parent’s vital signs, and labour progress. Pain relief can include breathing support, movement, medicines, or an epidural. The plan can change if labour slows, the baby shows concern, or vaginal birth becomes unsafe.

Discuss your preferences for pain relief, movement, birth companions, monitoring, and feeding before labour. Learn when to contact your maternity unit and pack essentials according to its guidance. During labour, changing position, staying hydrated as advised, and using calm breathing may support coping. Oxytocin may be used by clinicians when contractions need help. If labour needs to start medically, induction of labour is a separate process.

Contact your maternity team for regular painful contractions, leaking fluid, vaginal bleeding, reduced fetal movement, or concerns about your health. Seek urgent assessment for heavy bleeding, severe constant abdominal pain, fainting, severe headache with vision changes, or difficulty breathing. A caesarean section may be recommended when vaginal birth would pose a greater concern for parent or baby.
