What should you know about human metapneumovirus pneumonia?

Human metapneumovirus can inflame the airways and lung tissue. Pneumonia may cause cough, fever, chills, tiredness, shortness of breath or coughing up phlegm. Symptoms overlap with influenza, COVID-19 and other respiratory infections, so the cause cannot be identified from symptoms alone. A clinician may listen to your chest, check oxygen levels and decide whether imaging or testing is needed.

Young children, older adults and people with lung, heart or immune problems may become more unwell. Most care focuses on supporting breathing, hydration and recovery; antibiotics only help when a bacterial infection is also suspected or confirmed.

Rest, drink fluids if you can, avoid smoke and keep distance from people at higher risk while you have respiratory symptoms. Follow prescribed inhalers or oxygen instructions. Wash hands, cover coughs and improve ventilation. Arrange medical review if breathlessness is new, fever continues, or a cough is worsening rather than settling.

Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake or rapidly worsening weakness. Urgent assessment is needed when a person cannot drink, produces very little urine, or develops symptoms of sepsis such as extreme illness with fast deterioration.
