What should you know about huff cough?

Short answer
A huff cough is a controlled breath out through an open mouth that helps move mucus toward the larger airways.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Technique
- Open-mouth, controlled exhalation rather than a forceful closed-throat cough
- Main purpose
- Moving mucus toward the larger airways
How a huff cough works
Instead of closing your throat and coughing forcefully, you breathe in gently and exhale with an open mouth while saying “huff”. This creates airflow that can loosen mucus without the same strain as repeated hard coughs. A small huff can move mucus from the deeper airways; a larger huff can bring it toward the mouth.
Huffing can be useful when mucus is present with conditions such as bronchiectasis, acute bronchitis or a common cold. A cough may also accompany asthma, allergic rhinitis or acid reflux, but huffing does not treat the underlying cause.
How to try it
Sit upright with your shoulders relaxed. Take a slow, comfortable breath in, hold it briefly, then breathe out firmly but not violently through an open mouth. Repeat with relaxed breathing between huffs. When mucus reaches the throat, use a normal cough to clear it into a tissue. Stop if you develop chest pain, marked wheezing, dizziness or worsening breathlessness.
Drink fluids as appropriate for you and use any prescribed inhaler exactly as directed. A physiotherapist can tailor airway-clearance techniques when mucus is frequent or difficult to clear.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion or coughing up more than a small streak of blood. Arrange medical assessment for a cough that persists, recurring chest infections, fever that is worsening, unexplained weight loss or mucus that changes substantially. A huff cough should not delay assessment of these warning signs.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your cough is mainly clearing mucus or signalling irritation, which technique suits your breathing pattern, and whether you need an inhaler review or breathing assessment. Mention the colour and amount of mucus, triggers and any nighttime symptoms.

Questions people ask
Is a huff cough the same as a normal cough?
No. It uses controlled airflow through an open mouth and is intended to move mucus with less strain.
Can huffing stop the cause of a cough?
No. It may help clear mucus, but infection, asthma, reflux or another cause may still need treatment.
