Wear clothing that allows access to the chest and lower limbs, and tell the team about medicines, implanted devices or skin sensitivity. You usually lie still and breathe normally while the recording is made. The electrodes are removed afterwards; mild skin irritation can occur where adhesive was used. Avoid vigorous movement or talking during the tracing because muscle activity can affect the recording.

An ECG appointment should not delay emergency help for severe or persistent chest pain, fainting, sudden breathlessness, blue lips, new weakness or a racing heartbeat with light-headedness. Call emergency services for these symptoms, especially when they begin suddenly or occur with sweating, nausea or pressure spreading to the arm, jaw or back.
