How long does transvaginal ultrasound take to work for ovarian cysts?

The scan uses a slim ultrasound probe placed in the vagina to create pictures of the uterus, ovaries and nearby structures. The sonographer or clinician can often review the images as the scan happens. A radiologist or clinician may then issue a report, and the timing for that report depends on the service and whether further review is needed.

The scan can show a cyst’s size, position and appearance, including whether it looks fluid-filled or has solid areas. Those findings help guide follow-up, but an ultrasound cannot by itself predict exactly how a cyst will behave or confirm every diagnosis.

Follow the appointment instructions about bladder preparation, clothing and pain relief. Tell the clinician if insertion may be uncomfortable, if you are pregnant or might be pregnant, or if you have vaginal bleeding or an infection concern.

After the scan, ask when and how you will receive the report. Keep the follow-up appointment so the result can be matched with your symptoms, menstrual pattern and examination. A clinician may recommend observation, repeat imaging or another assessment rather than treatment based on one image alone.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden or severe pelvic pain, pain with fainting or marked dizziness, heavy vaginal bleeding, fever, or repeated vomiting. These symptoms can need prompt assessment and should not wait for a routine ultrasound result.
