How Long Does an MRI Scan Take to Work for a Brain Tumour?

MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed pictures of the brain and nearby structures. Different sequences can show tissue features, swelling, fluid spaces and how an area changes after contrast when contrast is appropriate. The scan does not remove or treat a brain tumour; it supplies information for diagnosis, staging or treatment planning.

After the images are acquired, a radiologist reviews them and prepares a report. Your clinician interprets that report alongside symptoms, examination findings and any biopsy or earlier scans. The report may therefore answer one question while leaving another for further assessment.

Tell the imaging team about metal implants, a pacemaker, kidney problems, pregnancy, allergies, or difficulty lying still. Follow instructions about food, drink and medicines if your appointment includes contrast or sedation. Remove metal objects and arrange help home if sedation is planned.

Ask when and how the result will be explained, especially if the scan is part of an urgent treatment decision. Bring earlier imaging details if requested, and keep the follow-up appointment even if you feel well.

Seek urgent medical help for a first seizure, a seizure that does not stop, sudden weakness, new trouble speaking, severe confusion, or a sudden severe headache. Contact the imaging team promptly for breathing difficulty, widespread hives or facial swelling after contrast. New or rapidly worsening neurological symptoms should not wait for a routine scan review.

Ask what the MRI is intended to clarify, whether contrast is needed, and when the report will be available. Ask who will explain the images, whether earlier scans will be compared, and what happens if the result is unclear or shows a change.
