How Is Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation Treated?

Short answer
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is treated by controlling the trigger, using sun protection, and applying carefully selected pigment-lightening treatments.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the marks appear
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is extra colour left after skin inflammation or injury. It can follow acne, atopic dermatitis, insect bites, shaving irritation, or another rash. The mark may be brown, grey, or darker than the surrounding skin, and pigment deeper in the skin can take longer to fade. New irritation can create additional marks, so treating the cause comes before aggressive lightening.
Ways to improve the colour
Use broad-spectrum sunscreen and reduce direct ultraviolet exposure, especially on exposed areas. Do not scratch, pick, or use strong exfoliants on healing skin. A dermatologist may consider hydroquinone treatment, a topical retinoid, or another option based on the site, depth of pigment, skin tone, pregnancy status, and the active condition. Apply prescribed products only as directed because irritation can worsen discoloration. Acne, eczema, or another trigger should be treated at the same time.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment when pigmentation appears without a clear preceding rash or injury, changes quickly, becomes itchy or painful, or does not match the usual pattern of a healing mark. Seek care for an active rash, pus, spreading warmth, or swelling before starting a lightening product. A clinician can also check whether a dark patch is a different condition rather than post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Questions for your doctor
What caused this pigment, and is the trigger still active? Which treatment is suitable for my skin tone and the body area? How can I reduce irritation and protect the area while it fades?

Questions people ask
Does post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation fade?
Many marks gradually become lighter, but the time varies with pigment depth, skin tone, ongoing inflammation, and sun exposure.
Can I use a strong exfoliant on a dark mark?
Strong exfoliation can irritate the skin and make the colour more noticeable, so use a clinician-guided routine instead.
