How is cubital tunnel syndrome treated?

Short answer
Cubital tunnel syndrome is treated by avoiding elbow pressure and prolonged bending, using support when appropriate, and adding physiotherapy or nerve-release surgery for persistent nerve problems.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Nerve involved
- The ulnar nerve at the inner elbow
- First changes

Why the elbow matters
Cubital tunnel syndrome occurs when the ulnar nerve is irritated as it passes behind the inner elbow. It may cause tingling or numbness in the little and ring fingers, aching around the elbow, or a weak grip. Bending the elbow for long periods and leaning on its inner side can increase pressure on the nerve. An examination may include sensation, finger strength, and hand coordination; nerve tests or imaging may be considered when the diagnosis is uncertain or symptoms are significant.
Practical treatment measures
Change sleeping and work habits so the elbow is not tightly bent or pressed against a hard surface. A splint or other support at night may help keep the elbow in a less compressed position. Physiotherapy can address nerve mobility, posture, shoulder and forearm mechanics, and safe hand use; exercises should not increase tingling. If symptoms continue, grip weakness develops, or the nerve is substantially compressed, a specialist may discuss cubital tunnel release to create more room for the nerve.
When to seek review
Book a clinical review for persistent hand numbness, increasing elbow pain, or difficulty opening jars, typing, or handling small objects. Prompt assessment is needed for visible wasting of the hand muscles, rapidly worsening weakness, or numbness that no longer comes and goes. Sudden arm weakness after an injury is urgent and may have another cause.
Questions for your doctor
Is the ulnar nerve irritated at the elbow or elsewhere? Should I use a night splint, and for how long? Which exercises are safe? What findings would make cubital tunnel release worth considering?

Questions people ask
Can cubital tunnel syndrome settle without surgery?
Milder symptoms may improve after reducing elbow pressure and prolonged bending, sometimes with support and physiotherapy. Ongoing weakness needs specialist review.
Why are the little and ring fingers affected?
Those fingers receive sensation from the ulnar nerve, which travels through the cubital tunnel behind the elbow.
