Short answer

Constipation is treated with fluids, fibre, movement, regular toilet habits, and medicines when needed after checking the cause.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Helpful first steps
Fluids, gradual fibre, movement, and a regular toilet routine
Medication advice
Choose a laxative with a pharmacist or clinician

What treatment involves

A clinician may ask about stool frequency, hardness, pain, bleeding, diet, activity, and medicines. Food-based fibre can help add bulk, while adequate fluid supports softer stool. A gradual change is kinder to the bowel than suddenly adding a large amount of fibre. If these measures are not enough, a pharmacist or clinician may suggest a short course of a laxative. Different laxatives work by softening stool, drawing water into it, or stimulating bowel movement, so the choice depends on your symptoms and health.

Constipation can accompany dehydration, haemorrhoids, an anal fissure, diverticular disease, or an underactive thyroid. Treating the related problem may improve bowel symptoms; thyroid hormone replacement may be considered when hypothyroidism is diagnosed.

Steps you can take

Drink regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids. Include fibre-rich foods such as vegetables, fruit, beans, and whole grains, and increase them gradually. Walk or move each day if you can. Use the toilet when you feel the urge, allow time without straining, and place your feet on a low support so your knees are above your hips. Ask a pharmacist before using a laxative, particularly during pregnancy or if you have ongoing medical conditions. Nutrition counselling can help you build a realistic eating plan.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice if constipation keeps returning, does not improve with self-care, or begins after a medicine change. Seek urgent help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, marked swelling, inability to pass stool or gas, or blood in the stool. These features need assessment rather than repeated laxative use.

Questions for your doctor

Could a medicine or thyroid problem be contributing? Which fibre or laxative is suitable for me? How long should I try it, and what symptoms mean I should stop and seek help?
