How is chronic sinusitis treated?

Persistent sinus inflammation can narrow drainage pathways and cause a blocked nose, facial pressure, headache or mucus draining into the throat. Allergic rhinitis may keep the nasal lining inflamed, so identifying triggers can change the plan. A GP can examine your nose and symptoms, review medicines and decide whether further assessment is needed.

Use saline rinses or sprays as directed and follow the technique for any prescribed nasal steroid spray; these treatments often need consistent use rather than occasional doses. Avoid smoke and known irritants. Allergy treatment may include reducing exposure or medicines recommended for you. Antibiotics are not suitable for every flare, because many sinus symptoms are driven by inflammation rather than bacteria.

Seek urgent medical help for swelling around an eye, vision changes, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion or a rapidly worsening illness. Arrange review for persistent one-sided blockage, repeated nosebleeds, facial swelling, high fever or symptoms that do not improve with the agreed plan.
