How is bald patches treated?

Patchy hair loss is a symptom rather than one diagnosis. Smooth patches may fit [Alopecia Areata](/conditions/alopecia-areata/), while scale or broken hairs can suggest [Scalp Ringworm](/conditions/scalp-ringworm/). Shiny skin or loss of follicle openings raises concern for [Scarring Alopecia](/conditions/cicatricial-alopecia/); uneven broken hairs may relate to [Hair Pulling Disorder](/conditions/trichotillomania/). A clinician may inspect the scalp, hair shafts and skin, and sometimes take a sample.

Do not start steroid or antifungal products on the scalp without knowing the cause. Depending on the findings, treatment may calm immune inflammation, clear a fungal infection, address pulling or irritation, or monitor regrowth. Handle hair gently, avoid tight styles and chemical irritation, and photograph the patches so changes are easier to track. Arrange a dermatology assessment for new, enlarging or recurrent patches, especially with scalp pain, scale, redness, pustules or eyebrow loss. Seek prompt care if hair loss is sudden and widespread, the scalp is tender or swollen, or a child has a scaly patch with broken hairs.
