How effective is thyroid function test for hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism means the thyroid is producing or releasing too much thyroid hormone. Blood testing usually compares thyroid-stimulating hormone with thyroid hormones. A low thyroid-stimulating hormone level with raised thyroid hormones supports excess thyroid activity, while other patterns need interpretation in context. The test can show that the thyroid is overactive, but it does not by itself show whether the cause is Graves disease, thyroid inflammation, a medicine effect, or a thyroid nodule. Symptoms, examination, medicines, and sometimes additional tests complete the picture.

Discuss the result with a clinician rather than relying on a single value or an online range. Mention tremor, heat intolerance, sweating, diarrhoea, sleep problems, weight change, eye symptoms, or a racing heartbeat. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, heart conditions, supplements, and medicines because these details can affect interpretation or treatment choices. Follow-up may include repeat blood testing, examination, or tests that clarify the cause.

Get emergency help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, confusion, or a very fast heartbeat that does not settle. Seek prompt assessment for worsening eye pain or vision changes, marked weakness, or an inability to keep fluids down. A thyroid blood test cannot safely assess these urgent symptoms on its own.
